The fetus snatcher’s insanity defense

On Monday, an Alabama woman was convicted of choking an 8 month pregnant woman and, while the soon-to-be mother was still alive, as prosecutors allege, cut the baby from her womb. The woman’s defense attorneys argued that she was suffering from pseudocyesis, which causes a woman to falsely believe she is pregnant and exhibit outward signs of pregnancy. As cnn.com states, “they portrayed her as a victim of severe mental illness whose delusion of being pregnant was being challenged, causing her to enter a dreamlike state when the killing took place.” This insanity defense did not work and now the woman may be facing the death penalty.

Do you believe the woman’s insanity defense should have prevailed? Under what circumstances do you believe a defendant should be allowed to use this defense?

Ellen DeGeneres’s dog adoption woes

On Ellen’s talk show on Tuesday, she shed buckets of tears. Not over the war in Iraq or the country’s health care crisis or even her relationship with Porcia di Rossi. Instead, Ellen was in hysterics because a dog she adopted from a pet adoption agency was repossessed because she gave it to another family. Apparently the agency has such strict rules and iron-clad contracts that when the dog didn’t get along with Ellen’s cats and she gave it to another family, she broke those rules, and the agency took the dog from the new family. That family is obviously heartbroken, as they now love the dog. Ellen was pleading on her show for the agency to give the dog back to the family.

Do you agree or disagree with the agency’s policies?

Bride sues florist over color of flowers

I just saw on the news a story about a bride that sued the florist she hired to handle the table arrangements for her wedding. According to the bride, not only were the flowers not the color agreed upon, but they were also wilted. So what did she do once the ring was on her finger and her relatives had eaten their cake? She filed a suit against the florist for $400,000 for restitution and damages for breach of contract. The contract price was just over $27,000, though.

Is this a winning case? Or is a judge going to laugh this bride right out of court? Should people be able to tie up the courts with law suits like this?
